Shuvam Dewanjee

Hibiscus Eyes of a Dum Dum Girl

She came to me a stranger and left a friend

With miasma and beauty over her face and chest

Thinking of her leaves my soul unsettled again

Perhaps she could have but she did her best.

The ringmaster enters and ensnares

Escorting monkeys in their black robes

You can die while they pretend to care

It’s the exploiter’s age old trope.

With words behind her glasses and hair behind her ears

In days of yester when she took me inside

Her world as its crumbling was near

Being apart tore us unsatisfied.

Her shivering heart and hibiscus eyes

How could I not be with her in corridors and lanes

I’m stuck inside of reveries even though she tries

Our time that was, time blossoms and wanes.

All of it seems so unreal and well-timed

It’ll be a cold brew and a far-away place

You cannot repeat but you can make it rhyme

With a familiar you and a cup of solace.
